Born out of Caerphilly I spent the first seven years of my childhood in the rich Dorset countryside and developed a love of the outdoors. But it wasn’t until my father lent me his prized film SLR camera that I was first introduced to photography. Although I had previously been very involved with various other art forms, I was completely taken by the beauty and aesthetic poetry of the photographic image.

Development

With my qualifications in Graphic Art, and Landscape and Garden Design plus a full-time job as funding, I now take every opportunity to get outside for shoots and have always tried to blend my interests in my photography. All of my free time is spent exploring the Suffolk countryside with a green approach, either by bicycle or on foot, which allows me to immerse myself fully into the countryside environment.

Preferences

Both the wide open spaces of the land as well as hidden secrets waiting to be discovered interest me immensely. There is nothing more intriguing than finding some hidden detail within nature that may have been missed by others. I use my experience of fine drawing to capture not just what has seen in nature but also the mood of the place at the time I was there. Photography as a medium has shown me that a camera can be a true vehicle for communicating the visual word, and I continue to explore its possibilities.

Equipment

I currently use a Nikon D80 camera with three Prime lenses, a Velbon D-500 tripod and a Lowepro Dryzone Rover. I prefer the fixed focal length lenses for their superior sharpness and speed. The Sigma 20mm 1.8 lens is the most versatile and is used for either low light, landscape, indoor or close-up shots, I sometimes use it with a circular polarizer. I use a Sigma 105mm 2.8 Macro lens, not only for extreme close-up work but also for portraiture. I also have a Volghtlander Ultron 40mm f2.0 with a B+W 093 IR filter, which I mainly use for infrared photography. By using these three Prime lenses, I can successfully capture the shot as creatively as possible within its fixed focal length.
